The Pro Designed Wristguards are fantastic, though not cheap at about $50. They're extremely durable and of solid construction. The "spoon" shaped splint on the bottom spreads the force of the impact over more of your palm (than some other wrist guards), and there is no lateral movement, no movement at all really. These things are stiff–in a good way. You put them on and you know your wrists are going to be looked after.
Though they can technically be opened from the side, getting the wrist straps in the little rings, and the hand strap set perfectly, takes more time that I'm willing to bother with. So I always slide it on and off rather than opening it up all the way.
Construction-wise, I have noticed that the velcro on these seems to want to get all puffed up and furry. It's not a real problem, it's just weird because none of my other gear does this. The stitching however is thick and high quality.
The only real functional downside is that they can cause some bruising to your arm at the top of the wrist guard. There is no give to these things, so hitting hard can cause quarter-sized bruises at about mid-arm. It's not a big thing, and if you think about it, when you fall hard, that force has to go somewhere... It's possible they could fix this with some experimentation with regard to the length, but I wouldn't stake anything on it.
Pros
• Protective as hell
• Durable
Cons
• Can cause bruising
• More expensive
